Comprehensive Eye Examination (Check-up)
Comprehensive eye health assessment for prevention and early diagnosis.
Why is a comprehensive eye examination necessary?
Many eye conditions progress with no bothersome symptoms in their early stages — for instance, glaucoma and cataract can remain "silent" until vision or quality of life is significantly affected.
A comprehensive examination allows early recognition of changes in the cornea, eyelids, lens, optic nerve and retina, and supports safety in driving or work whenever vision certification is required.
Systemic conditions (e.g. diabetes mellitus) are often reflected in the eye — the check-up fits into your overall health picture alongside the guidance of your treating physician.
How often you should be re-examined is not the same for everyone: age, symptoms, family history and any existing diagnosis determine whether an annual check-up, more frequent monitoring, or simply reassessment when your vision changes is appropriate.
What does the examination include?
The flow of the visit is tailored to your history and needs; it typically includes:
- Measurement of visual acuity (with and without correction) to assess functional vision
- Automated and subjective refraction — the basis for an accurate prescription, see refraction and eyeglasses prescription for details
- Tonometry (intraocular pressure) as a key element in screening for glaucoma and other conditions
- Slit-lamp biomicroscopy of the cornea, eyelids, lens and anterior segment — often revealing dryness, blepharitis or early cataract
- Assessment of the optic nerve and macula (with or without pupil dilation)
In selected cases additional tests may be requested, such as OCT / OCTA, visual fields and OCT RNFL or digital fundus photography — always at the doctor's discretion and with a clear treatment or monitoring goal.
Pupil dilation and fundus examination
Pupil dilation (mydriasis) with safe eye drops allows a complete view of the fundus, optic nerve and peripheral retina, where this is judged necessary.
After dilation, near vision and light sensitivity may be temporarily reduced, so driving is not recommended for several hours.
For conditions affecting central and peripheral vision, see also retina and macula diseases — the check-up is often the first step before specialised imaging.
In some cases, fundus examination without full dilation, or examination at a later visit, may be preferred; the decision is based on age, tolerance and the risk questionnaire — always after explaining the benefits and limitations.
Who needs regular check-ups?
The recheck schedule is individualised; more frequent visits are generally advised when:
- There is a family history of glaucoma or other inherited eye conditions
- There is diabetes mellitus or other systemic conditions with eye complications
- Contact lenses are worn, or there is chronic dryness / blepharitis — see dry eye syndrome & IPL and blepharitis treatment
- There has been previous eye surgery or cataract monitoring
- Vision certification is required (driving licence, occupation)
Even without known problems, adults benefit from periodic examination; the exact frequency is agreed during the visit.
Children and teenagers with strabismus, amblyopia, difficulty at school or a family history need an individualised plan; the check-up is combined with age-appropriate tests and often with refraction when indicated.
Practical guidance before your visit
Bring your current glasses or contact lens prescription, a list of medications and any previous test results.
If you wear contact lenses, ask whether you need to remove them before certain parts of the examination.
The duration depends on whether full or partial dilation is needed and on any additional tests; it is a good idea to allow some extra time after the appointment if dilation is expected.
For issuing or renewing a driving licence, the check-up can be combined with the requirements of the electronic medical certificate — let us know when booking if you need both services.
