Electronic Driving Licence Certificate
Ophthalmologist's medical certificate for issuing or renewing a driving licence.
What does the ophthalmological certificate cover?
Electronic issuance or renewal of a driving licence is accompanied by medical certificates from the specialties defined by current regulations. The ophthalmological certificate confirms that vision and, where required, other visual parameters meet the standards for safe driving.
The examination does not replace a full preventive eye health check, but it is often combined with a comprehensive eye examination (check-up) if you wish, or if findings are identified that require further assessment.
Requesting a licence certificate and a glasses update at the same time is common practice — let us know when booking so enough time is scheduled for both the measurement and the certificate.
The certificate is valid for a set period under current regulations; for a new issue or renewal, check the service's deadlines in good time so your existing licence does not expire before all medical certificates are completed.
What does the examination at the practice include?
The core element is measurement of visual acuity with and without the correction you use (glasses or contact lenses), according to the requirements for each licence category.
Measurement is performed with standardised charts and correct lighting; each eye is checked separately as well as both together. The goal is an objective record of functional vision for driving, not simply the "best possible" acuity without context of use.
In selected cases a visual field test (peripheral vision) may be requested; the need is assessed by the ophthalmologist based on history, licence category and current regulations. Related monitoring tools over time include visual fields and OCT RNFL when there is a clinical indication (e.g. glaucoma monitoring), not as a mandatory step for every licence.
Colour vision or specific requirements for professional licences are discussed only if they fall within current regulations; there is no single routine that applies to every applicant.
Glasses, contact lenses and precise correction
If vision with your current glasses does not meet the required limits, updating the prescription is discussed at refraction and eyeglasses prescription; measurement for the certificate is repeated after the adjustment.
Contact lenses may be accepted as correction provided use is stable and safe; in cases of irritation, infection or unstable vision, clinical treatment takes priority over driving.
Night driving, glare from lights or difficulty with astigmatism are not always solved simply by a "stronger" prescription — sometimes improving the eye surface (dryness) or the quality of the spectacle lenses (reflections, coating) is needed, together with a comprehensive examination.
Documents and preparation
It is a good idea to bring:
- ID card or passport
- Your current driving licence (for renewals)
- The glasses or contact lenses you use while driving
- A list of medications and any known eye conditions (surgery, glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc.)
If you are unable to visit the practice, a home eye examination may be discussed for parts of the assessment; feasibility depends on circumstances and available equipment.
After the examination and electronic submission
Once the examination is complete, the ophthalmological certificate is issued according to the current standard for the Ministry of Transport platform. Final submission of the application and the other medical specialties remain the applicant's responsibility, in accordance with the service's instructions.
If further examination or treatment is needed before a favourable certificate can be issued, the next steps are clearly explained (a new measurement after correction, referral for visual field testing, etc.).
If dilation for a check-up has taken place on the same day, it may not be possible to complete the driving measurement immediately — coordinate appointments or schedule a separate visit for the certificate.
Licence categories and individualisation
Requirements can differ depending on the licence category (car, motorcycle, professional use, etc.); the examination is adapted to your request and to current regulations.
Older drivers or those on multiple medications benefit from regular reassessment of vision and general eye health; the driving certificate captures a specific moment in time and does not replace ongoing monitoring of chronic conditions.
