Treatment of Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration with Valeda
Valeda Light Delivery System · Photobiomodulation (PBM)
What is the Valeda Light Delivery System?
The Valeda Light Delivery System is a modern, non-invasive treatment approach for dry age-related macular degeneration, based on photobiomodulation (PBM). LumiThera developed the Valeda system, an approved PBM application for the dry form of AMD, with controlled light parameters at the practice to keep exposure within clinical limits.
The method is introduced after a full assessment as part of retina and macula diseases, often together with a comprehensive eye examination (check-up) and imaging follow-up where indicated. The aim is to support cellular function at selected stages, without incisions or injections.
Individualisation includes clear information about the expected benefit, the limitations of the method, the role of regular reassessment after each course of applications, and the possible alternatives if the clinical picture changes.
Photobiomodulation (PBM): mechanism and the role of Valeda
Photobiomodulation uses a combination of different light wavelengths aimed at activating key cellular mechanisms. This action is associated with improved mitochondrial function and increased cellular energy production, within non-thermal, dose-controlled applications to the retina.
LumiThera is at the forefront of research into PBM therapies for degenerative eye conditions. Valeda does not replace treatments for wet AMD or acute conditions; where indicated, the plan may include other established interventions, such as intravitreal anti-VEGF injections or, in selected cases, argon laser photocoagulation.
The application is performed with the patient in a stable position and protected from involuntary movement, so the beam repeatedly targets the same area. The ophthalmologist explains what to expect during the session and how the course is combined with any medication already being taken (e.g. supplements, antioxidants or others where indicated), without arbitrary changes made without medical guidance.
Age-related macular degeneration: dry and wet forms in the context of care
Age-related macular degeneration is one of the main causes of vision loss in people over 65. Around 90% of patients present with the dry form, while around 10% have the wet form, which requires different treatment strategies and close monitoring.
Valeda is specifically aimed at dry AMD and is discussed as part of an overall plan together with regular check-ups. Retinal OCT and digital fundus photography help assess drusen, oedema and structural changes, so realistic goals can be set and reassessment scheduled after each course of applications.
In patients with known diabetic retinopathy or other coexisting conditions, the decision for PBM is combined with a check of general health and eye stability. Where further vascular imaging is needed, fluorescein angiography (FA) can supplement the picture, always at the examiner's discretion and not as a substitute for clinical examination.
Indications for use
Valeda treatment is applied with the aim of:
- Improving retinal function through photobiomodulation
- Reducing inflammatory processes and oedema, where this is consistent with the clinical picture and assessment
- Limiting drusen deposition as part of an individualised plan
- Supporting healing after eye trauma or surgery when the method is included in the treatment plan
- Improving visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in patients with degenerative conditions such as dry AMD
Treatment at the practice and next steps
Sessions take place at the practice, according to a standardised protocol (usually a course of applications at predetermined intervals), with instructions explained before and after exposure. Safety and tolerance are assessed clinically; any coexisting condition or medication is taken into account before starting.
After completing the recommended course, a check of visual acuity, reading or contrast tasks (where applicable) is scheduled, along with comparison with previous imaging. If new symptoms appear (e.g. distortion of lines, central blurring), immediate reassessment is needed rather than delay, to rule out conversion to the wet form or other acute developments.
