Biography

Elena Rapti is an Ophthalmic Surgeon (MD, MSc) based in Athens, focused on modern diagnostic and interventional ophthalmology.

She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Plovdiv (English-language programme) and holds a Master's Degree (MSc) with distinction from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, focused on new drug development, with a particular research interest in age-related macular degeneration and its treatment.

She trained in Ophthalmology at the General Panarcadian Hospital of Tripoli "I Evangelistria" and at the Athens General Hospital "Elpis", receiving comprehensive training across the full range of clinical and surgical ophthalmology.

At the Athens General Hospital "Elpis" she gained substantial surgical experience, particularly in cataract surgery, as well as in the surgical management of lacrimal system disorders, performing external dacryocystorhinostomy procedures. She was also trained in eyelid surgery (such as blepharoplasty) and in the surgical management of pterygium.

During her residency, she was trained in the management of emergency cases, the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic conditions, and the performance of modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

She also trained at the 1st University Ophthalmology Clinic of the Athens General Hospital "G. Gennimatas", in the Cornea and Vitreoretinal departments, gaining experience in specialised imaging techniques and modern therapeutic approaches.

She served as a rural health service doctor at the Megalopoli Health Centre, while also participating in the Ophthalmology Department of the General Panarcadian Hospital of Tripoli, and later served an extension at the Astros Kynourias Health Centre, gaining substantial experience in primary care and emergency management.

Her clinical practice includes:

  • comprehensive eye examinations with an individualised approach to patients
  • management of ophthalmic emergencies
  • high-resolution imaging (OCT, OCT-Angiography, fluorescein angiography, B-scan ultrasound)
  • assessment and monitoring of macular disease and glaucoma
  • laser procedures (YAG capsulotomy & iridotomy, argon laser, SLT)
  • intravitreal (anti-VEGF) injections
  • corneal topography and anterior segment evaluation
  • treatment of dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (IPL)
  • eyelid minor surgery and lacrimal system conditions

She maintains an active scientific record, with publications in international and Greek scientific journals and participation in scientific conferences.

She has also taken part in voluntary ophthalmology outreach programmes with a mobile eye-care unit, led by Professor Pallikaris, on remote islands of the Aegean, and currently offers her services as an ophthalmologist with "Doctors of the World".

She currently collaborates with Athens EyeCare Clinic in Athens, where she maintains an active, independent clinical and surgical practice, providing comprehensive ophthalmology care.
